MY BLACK HISTORY PROJECT
Pop Up Sneaker Gallery featuring works created by the students of Yes Prep Southeast “Sneaker Design Club”.
KimmiskiArt partnered with the Houston based Non Profit Legends Do Live and Reebok to celebrate Black History Month with “THIS IS MY HISTORY” - a Pop Up Sneaker museum featuring works created by the students of Yes Prep Southeast “Sneaker Design Club”. The students under the club had to illustrate what Black History Month meant to them via the Reebok Classics that were donated to them. iYo Visuals documented their process of making their custom pieces, and at same getting some interesting conversations between students showing the true strength behind Art, sneaker culture, and education. Thus bringing Culture to the classroom. Thank you to the Winston Contemporary Art gallery for hosting us!
Thoughts Post Project :
This project was really special to me. Previously teaching history and Yes Prep southeast being a predominantly Hispanic school, this was the prime time to understand how Black Culture influences the world. Being a HS Art instructor at the time I lead the Sneaker Club. In this club we talked hype, customizing and jobs in the industry. Getting a chance to collaborate design and showcase in their own show with Reebok is something they will never forget.
